Surgical Endodontic Treatments

Occasionally, a tooth that's already had root canal treatment develops a new infection at the tip of the root — often too small or awkwardly placed to treat again from inside the tooth. In these cases, a minor surgical procedure (an apicectomy) can resolve the problem while still saving the tooth.

❉ What’s involved:

Under local anaesthetic, the root tip is accessed through the gum, the infected tissue and the very end of the root are removed, then the area is sealed from that end. The gum is stitched and heals within a week or two.

This is a specialist, precision procedure, carried out with magnification and modern materials to give the best chance of long-term success — often the last option before considering extraction.
